The fishing sinker is chosen according to the field conditions and the technique being used. Only certain types of lead are suitable for sea fishing.
A sinker is a general term for a fishing weight. This accessory is usually made of lead, as the material offers satisfactory performance in terms of strength and density. It is attached to the hook or lure to help it sink. Fishing sinker also provides mass to facilitate line casting. In addition, the weight holds the hook or lure in position in any environment. Whether trolling, drifting or anchoring, sinkers – of all shapes and sizes – will set the lure at different depths in saltwater.
Bank fishing sinkers
These sinkers are generally used to put a bait close to the bottom. They are usually round or bell-shaped to avoid getting stuck in the sea bed. Some models are attached to the line with a swivel to reduce twisting. Other types have sharp edges and spikes to stick in soft sand. The bank fishing sinker can be attached to the end of the shank or above the hook.
Trolling weights
Trolling weights are used to drag baits at different depths. They often have a slim, elongated shape. The most effective models have swivels at each end to prevent the line from twisting. The weight of the sinker depends on the speed of the troll and the size of the bait. When a fish hits the bait, it trips the wing and the angler can fight the fish. Whichever way you troll, the use of good quality swivels is recommended to avoid line twisting.
The egg lead
Fish will avoid a bait if they detect something suspicious. An egg sinker helps to dispel the fish’s suspicions by approaching the bait. As the name suggests, this accessory is shaped like an egg to hold a lead. It has a hole for the line to pass through. These saltwater sinkers work best with live or cut bait.
Special weights
Many sea fishing methods require special sinkers. Salmon anglers use drop sinkers that fall out of their line when a fish bites the bait. Slow trollers using live bait use large lead heads. Those who fish rocky terrain prefer thin sinkers. Whatever type of sea fishing you do, you should choose a weight that will keep the bait in the feeding area.
Split shot
It is possible to place one of these small lead balls on the leader above the hook. This allows the bait to be carried a few feet below the surface. Split shot works best with small baits, light line and a weak current.
