how come fish from unconnected waterways are related ?
I don't know my fish very well, but I know there are trout in say colorado lakes /rivers, and there are trout in washington / california /idaho lakes and rivers that ARE NOT connected. Assuming the fish weren't transplanted, how can there be say a rainbow trout in the colorado river, and another rainbow trout in a lake in washington ? Yes thousands of years ago there were huge lakes over the west coast, but wouldn't that have caused the fish to evolve into WAY different species (if they're separated) I've also heard that there are salmon in sweden and scotland, so what the hell is up with that ? the salmon had to COME from somewhere, so either they originated in the ocean near oregon, or in sweden in the atlantic, but I can't see a school of salmon having a brilliant idea of not spawning back up their stream, that they've done for hundreds of years, and deciding to take a 6,000 mile journey across the ocean to go to sweden , and stay there ? or vice versa swimming over to washington?

As you point out, there are indeed salmonids on both sides of the continental divide in North America, and on both sides of the Atlantic. However, they are not all the same species of salmon. Along the west coast of North America, the salmon are of a group known as the Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus) - including the cutthroat, coho, sockeye and chinook salmon, as well as the rainbow trout. East of the Rockies, the salmon are Atlantic salmon (Salmo) - including Atlantic salmon and brown trout. In Europe, the salmon are also in the Genus Salmo, including some of the same species as are found in North America. It is thought that all of the salmon stock started out in the Atlantic, but about 12 million years ago (during the Miocene), the Arctic Ocean was a bit more hospitable than it is now, and some of the salmon were able to make it over to the Pacific. Once isolated, they formed a distinct, separate lineage of salmon that colonized the waters of the west coast. Fossil, genetic and geological evidence all support this theory. To complicate matters, however, man has been busily introducing trout into ponds far beyond their natural range. Rainbow trout have been introduced into ponds all over the world, for example. Brown trout have also been a popular introduction. Introductions like these have been taking place for hundreds of years, and rarely have any record of having happened, so it tends to screw up the picture of the natural distribution of the fish. Via this anthropogenic transplant, fish like Rainbow trout are now found in many ponds that are totally disconnected from any other water body. They are also often introduced into man-made lakes and ponds.
