Hikers and lovers of the outside flock to Cradle Mountain yearly to tackle the challenge of this six day Overland Track. This 40 mile (65km) trail takes you through the center of this wilderness, from Cradle Mountain itself all the way to Lake St Clair. Along the way, you trek through dolerite mountains, cross icy glacier fed streams and pass through pristine ecosystems that may be seen nowhere else on earth. The Overland Track is becoming so popular, in reality, that the Tasmanian and Australian Parks and Wildlife Services have taken steps to minimize the possible threat to the sensitive environment the a huge number of hikers who take the Overland Track each year pose. Ossa lies within the National Park boundaries and is usually the visiting rock climber's first stop in Tasmania. At almost a mile high, Mt. Ossa offers challenges to all levels of climbers. Often, after successful Mt. Ossa, climber's then move on towards the challenge of Frenchman's Gap, in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
