So I'm moving to Pueblo CO. I will be in between jobs at the time. I want to take this opportunity to take some extended time off. I have a few questions someone who has a passion for rafting could answer. And hopefully even have some general knowledge about the area I will be in. I will be renting a kayak before I leave pueblo and having a friend drop me off in Salida. I want to take me and all my camping/fishing gear through the Arkansas river, alone. Time is not an issue. So i have plenty of time to take it easy and explore and spend many many nights out there. I've just never ridden rapids before. I've been watching youtube videos of people rafting through some of those stretches of the river. And it all looks like I wont have anything to worry about. The worst part looks likes the stretch of rapids between the canyon walls. I've even put my google earth program into flight simulater mode and flown over the river from A-Z and dont see any damns or anything blocking the whole path, is this true. Also, how much does it cost to row that 100 mile stretch? How far in advance do I need to take care of that? Can I get away with not paying anything? Will anyone stop me? What will they do? Blow a whistle? Also. Are there any week or weeks long tours I could just go on? With a tour guide that hangs out with the crew for a week or two? Is there anything else that would help, like what kind of kayak i need, lemme know. okthxbye.

I can answer one part of your question, and unfortunately only one. There are some pretty nasty rapids in that stretch! Class 5. You REALLY need to know what you are doing for some spots. What time of year are you planning on being there? and What time of year were those videos taken? If they were taken in the late summer, of course they look calm. If you are planning on kayaking through there in May or early June, you'll encounter much heavier whitewater. You need to know what you are looking at. The rest, if you search Buena Vista and Salida chambers of commerce, you will find places that can help you with more information.

To make sure you are reeling in the perfect rod, it is always helpful to consult an experienced professional at a fly fishing outfitter. Rods are also categorized by number. For a lighter fish like a trout, it is good to use a number 3 rod and the rods run all the way up through a 12, which would be more suited for a heavier fish like a Tarpon. When selecting a rod, the first thing you will want to do is decide where and what type of fish you will be after. Factors like salt or fresh water and the weight of the fish, will be an integral part of choosing the best one for you. Because salt is corrosive, rods made specifically for saltwater can handle it better and they do not have extra wooden pieces etc. like you may find on a fresh water rod. In addition, they are sturdier and they have larger guides for knots to pass through. However, keep in mind when you are buying for salt water that some lines are meant for tropical weather fishing to prevent stickiness in hot weather and they can get wiry when used in the cold. If you want to be able to fish the tropics and the midwest, you will probably need a salt water rod and to switch out the line depending on the temperature. You also want to consider the bend, or action, in the rod. A fast rod only bends at the tip allowing long casting distances. The next level is medium which bends more in the middle of the rod and offers easier control, but does not cast quite as far as the fast. It's recommended for fisherman looking for a versatile rod to use in different conditions as well as for beginners. And the slow is a rod that bends all the way to the grip and offers maximum absorbency so the chance of cutting your line are reduced. Because they cannot cast distances, these rods are only used in small ponds and rivers. When fishing in a wide-open body of water, you will be able to handle a longer rod, compared to a tighter river, which would require something shorter. Also factor in the wind and water conditions you expect. For very rough waters, you may need a longer, 2-handle rod. Make sure you can maneuver the rod to your full ability and that the grip feels comfortable. Stronger fishermen can generally handle longer poles. Approximately a 9 foot rod is recommended for men and an 8 foot rod is recommended for women.
